I thought I would share some ideas on how to develop the love of reading in children. Being a retired first grade teacher, of course, I had to teach children how to read, but loving to read was also very important! I believe reading is a fun thing to do and I wanted to pass that love on to my students too!
The most important thing you can do is READ TO YOUR CHILD EVERY DAY! Experiencing the joy a book can bring is so important to a child/a future reader! This time is so special — snuggle up, read, laugh, giggle, cry, just have fun. Children learn about books /how they work and they develop this special bond with you, the parent. Grandparents you can help too. Read to your grandchildren. Have a basket of books so the children can read at your house too! At family get togethers, I would love to say at some point — ok kids! Go get a book and find an adult to read to. It was so much fun! As a retired first grade teacher, it brought me great joy seeing my family reading together!
