Take A Backyard Safari

I live in the Chicago area.  The weather is finally getting warmer!  Yeah!  It might be the perfect time to take a Backyard Safari!  It’s a good way to combine nature and math :)

You will need:

a clipboard

a marker

paper

a magnifying glass

maybe a bug catcher if you want to keep something that you find :)

What to do:

On your paper make 2 columns — 1 wide enought to draw the pictures of the creatures that you might find in the backyard.  The other will be where you tally the number of bugs or creatures that you do find .

Draw your  list of what creatures you might find in the backyard.  Leave a couple of empty spots in case there are some surprises :)

Next, Go on your Safari!!!!  Make a tally for every creature you find.  If you find ants, tally each ant you see and so on!

At the end, maybe draw a picture of what you did, write about your safari, or make a book about it.

It might be fun to do the same thing but in a park.  Afterwards, compare the findings.

What ever you do– HAVE FUN!!!!

I WOULD LOVE IT IF YOU WOULD WRITE AND TELL ME/US WHAT YOU DID!!!  I LOVE TO HEAR STORIES AND SEE ILLUSTRATIONS!!!!
